Stone wool properties

The idea of producing stone wool was fostered on Hawaii at the beginning of the last century. In the course of the volcanic eruption, fibres are formed from the erupted lava thrown in the air. The stone wool is, therefore, an exclusively natural product which unites the strength of stone and thermal insulation characteristics inherent to the wool. Stone wool fibres are the basic material used in production of all Rockwool products.

Fire safety

One of the most important properties of the stone wool is its ability to endure temperatures higher than 1000 °C. Properly applied, the Rockwool stone wool serves as a firesafe layer which provides invaluable minutes that may prove essential in saving human lives. The buildings insulated by the stone wool are safe from fire because stone wool prevents breaking and spreading of fire.

Thermal insulation

Stone wool has a very low thermal conductivity coefficient which makes it one of the best thermal insulation materials.
The Rockwool stone wool is an excellent thermal insulation material providing protection from cold and heat. Insulation systems in stone wool enable a maximum of energy savings for heating and cooling and additionally improve the microclimate and comfort in the buildings.

Acoustic insulation

Energy of acoustic vibrations travels through the stone wool structure and transforms into the heat. The stone wool structure with its intertwined fibres simply eliminates and absorbs the vibrations in the air. Such fibre structure makes the stone wool one of the most reliable construction materials for acoustic insulation.

Water repellence

The Rockwool stone wool may appear wet when exposed to water or rain. The water just stays on the surface because the Rockwool stone wool fibres are water repellent. Impregnation of the stone wool fibres is applied throughout the entire structure of the product, and not only on the surface. For this reason in particular, water may not penetrate into the inner layers of the product.

Steam permeability

The Rockwool stone wool is steam permeable, making the insulated building very comfortable for living or working because the moisture is not retained inside the building.

Dimension stability

The dimensions of the Rockwool stone wool do not change with the rise or fall of the surrounding temperature. The heterogeneous orientation of the stone wool fibres in the Rockwool products provides them with excellent mechanical properties and permanent dimension stability.
