Passive fire safety in buildings
Role of insulation and fire regulations in Turkey
Although Rockwool in Europe and worldwide is recognized as one of the strongest advocates for energy efficiency, for us in Rockwool, fire protection is one of the highest priorities. Therefore we have organized the event in YEM in Istanbul named Passive Fire Safety in Buildings: Role of Insulation and Fire Regulation in Turkey.

At the beginning Ozgur Oralkan, Sales and Business Development Manager in Turkey welcomed the guests. Mehdi Ossor, Business Unit Manager presented Rockwool Group, the biggest stone wool producer in the world.

The purpose of this event was to show how important it is that the buildings in which we live, work, entertain, heal or educate provide not only good thermal or sound insulation, or ensure healthy environment, but that they offer to us very good protection in case of fire.
The statistics show that 8 out of 10 people die in fire not of flame but are suffocated by poisonous gases emitted by combustible materials during fire. Rockwool fire expert, Miroslav Smolka, emphasized that threat of smoke toxicity is not taken into account in the EU fire safety regulations, particularly regarding sandwich panels. Additionally he presented how different insulating materials in ETICS and flat roof perform in case of fire. His presentation was supported by real case fires examples with human casualties which happened around the world. Miroslav has a long expertise in this area as he was previously managing a prestigious fire safety laboratory in Europe for 8 years.

Ilker Ibik, CEO of Efectis Era was speaking about fire safety legislation in Turkey and the test methods regarding properties of construction materials which should be applied in Turkey.

This event was targeted at architects, designers, investors, regulators and insurance companies. The big positive response as well as the active participation of the audience showed that this topic is attractive and needs to be focused on.
